When you agree to foster a child you will be expected to participate in training. Training starts with orientation and then progresses to on-going training on different topics to enable you to update your skills in line with current trends in foster care.

Training of foster parents is essential so that issues and concerns affecting the child, the child's family, the foster parents and the agency workers are presented in such a way that foster families are better equipped to care for the child.

Ideally foster parents should participate in specialised training before taking on a child with "special" needs, for example sexual abuse training, protective behaviours, teenagers in care, children at risk.

For foster parents in country areas training is available and details can be obtained from the Events page. Also available are books, articles and videos.
