Becoming A Foster Family
The first step to becoming a foster family is understanding the role of fostering.
We invite you to attend an information session, these are held regularly in the metropolitan area. If you live in the country contact your local Department of Communities or Fostering Services – see contact details below. At the information session, you will learn more about foster care and have a chance to meet foster parents. At the end of the information session, you will be in a better position to decide whether you and your family wish to proceed with fostering.
You will then need to complete an application form and some information sheets. The information you provide will help the Department of Communities assess as to which placement would best suit your family and benefit the child/children in your care.
The Department of Communities will ask for your permission to conduct screening checks.
An assessor will visit your home a number of times to assess whether you can offer safe care for children.
Prior to being registered as a carer you will be required to complete the mandatory Preparation Training.
All information is confidential.
