Insights from Sharla Abdullah on empowering and elevating the voices of children in care.
Sharla Abdullah (nee Jackson) is a proud Dja Dja Wurrung woman with strong connections to Kurrama/Banjima and Noongar country. With over 25 years of experience in the human services sector, she has worked across both government and not-for-profit organisations, with a particular focus on children and young people. Born and raised in the Pilbara, Sharla began her career at the local youth centre and was a representative on the Pilbara Committee of Young People—her first experience in advocacy. She later moved to Perth, where she worked at Rangeview Remand Centre, marking the start of her 14-year journey in Youth Justice. In 2013, she transitioned to Child Protection, where she worked until 2017 before moving to non-profit services. She returned to the Department of Communities in 2021 as an Aboriginal Practice Leader and has since served as the Advocate for Children in Care. As the Advocate, Sharla is dedicated to ensuring that children in care and those with a care experience have their voices heard and their interests protected. She is passionate about focusing on the views, concerns, and rights of children and young people in care, advocating for their well-being and future. In addition to her professional work, Sharla is a mother of two adult sons and an animal lover with many fur babies. She is also a coach in horse riding and an Equine Assisted Learning facilitator, using her expertise to guide and empower others. Culture is a vital part of her life, helping her stay grounded and connected to her roots. Sharla holds a Bachelor of Social Science and is currently completing her Master of Leadership, further strengthening her ability to lead and advocate for the young people she serves.
